ToggleDr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition is conducted by Greater Bombay Science Teachers’ Association since 1981.
Aim –To encourage students to take interest in science, to inculcate scientific attitude and to search science talent in students and motivate them towards basic sciences as well as to clear the scientific concepts among them
This unique four stage competition aims at arousing curiosity, problem solving attitude along with development of precision in observational and motor skills in young scientists.
This exam, named after the renowned Indian scientist Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, holds significant value for young aspiring scientists.

By participating in this exam, students not only showcase their knowledge and aptitude but also gain exposure to various scientific concepts and methodologies beyond their regular curriculum.
Structure of Homi Bhabha Junior Scientist exam
- Who can participate in Homi Bhabha Jr. Scientist Exam: –Students studying only in 6th std. and 9th std.
- Medium :-English and Marathi
( Note :- Students from Semi-English section can go for English or Marathi medium as per their comfort level. Selected medium will remain the same for ALL further stages of the competition. NO CHANGE IN THE SELECTED MEDIUM IS PERMITTED BY GBSTA). - Boards :-All Boards ( Maharashtra SSC / CBSE / ICSE / IB / OTHER STATE boards Students of all boards can appear for Homi Bhabha Jr. Scientist Exam.
This exam is conducted in four stages.
- Stage 1-Theory competition
- Stage 2-Practical competition
- Stage 3-General interview
- Stage 4-Evaluation and interview on action research project
Stage 1- Written Objective Theory Competition.
Stage 1 of Homi Bhabha Jr. Scientist Exam is Written Objective Theory Competition.
Written test consists 100 multiple choice questions based on science & General Knowledge in science as per standard for 100 marks. Students will get 90 min to solve 100 questions. Written test is conducted at local center in the month of October or November
Selection for phase II – Merit wise Top 7.5% students per region per Marathi medium, English medium (Maharashtra SSC Board, English Medium (All other Boards) will be selected for phase II. They will get Merit Certificate.
Remaining passed students will get Passing certificate.
Stage 2- Practical Test
For VI std.:
Stage 2 of Homi Bhabha Jr. Scientist Exam is practical test. Students hav to perform 5 experiments of 6 marks each based on general science.
Practical test will be conducted for 30 marks and students will get 30min(6 min per experiment )to perform the practical.
For IX std. :
a) Physics: 1 experiment, Marks-10, Time 10 min
b) Chemistry: 1 Experiment for marks 10, Time-10 min
c) Biology – 10 questions based on 10 specimens,Marks-10,Time-10 min
Selection for phase III and phase IV – 30% of the marks obtained in phase I + marks obtained in phase II will be considered.
Merit wise Top 10 % students will be selected for phase III and IV.
Stage 3-General interview
Marks 30, Time-5 to 7 min
Here the student has to face a personal interview based on general science (not project).
Stage IV-Evaluation of action research project and interview on action research work.- Marks 30, Time-5 to 7 min
Here the student has to present a report about his project and explanation of the project. This is followed by a question answer session with the examiners.
Selection for Medal : Considering 30% marks of Phase I, + Marks score of (Phase II + Phase III + Phase IV)
- Merit wise Top 10% candidates will get Gold Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 3000/-.
- Next 60% candidates will get Silver Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 2000/-
- Remaining all candidates will get Bronze Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 1000/-
